A spectacular second half winner by Christoph Preuss has left Bayern a massive nine points adrift of Schalke with just eight games to go this season and coach Ottmar Hitzfeld says it is now time to start thinking about the future.
"We know where we have problems in our team - that is mainly in the creative, attacking midfield position," he told the club's official website.
"We have to do something about that, there is no question about it."
The retirement of Sebastian Deisler during the season left a gap in the squad, and with 36-year-old Mehmet Scholl set to follow him in the summer, Bayern know that they will have to be busy in the transfer market in the coming months.
Schalke's Hamit Altintop, Alemannia Aachen's Jan Schlaudraff and Argentinian Jose Ernesto Sosa have already agreed moves to the Allianz Arena, but chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says the club are looking for more new faces.
"We don't want to stop at those three, but are still looking to bring another one or two top-quality players to FC Bayern," he said.
"We want to build a team that is not only able to challenge with the best at home, but also in Europe."
